Nightsteel – Nightsteel

Nightsteel is a brand-new Greek metal band that was founded in 2022 by bassist and songwriter Bill Sam. After a while, his best friend and drummer, Mike Foudotos joined the band and started working on some old demos that Bill had along with some new musical ideas.

Musically, Nightsteel blends heavy metal, power metal (both US and EU), melodic metal, hard rock, and NWOTHM, with influences from acts such as Judas Priest, Savatage, Helloween, Queensryche, Iron Maiden, Riot, Accept, Bonfire, Crimson Glory, and Manowar. The production is full, dynamic, and contemporary. The album was mixed & mastered by Loz at Fat as Funk Studio.

Their self-titled debut, released in early April 2025, is a thunderous declaration of heavy metal’s enduring power! Nightsteel channels the spirit of the golden metal era of the 80s while infusing it with a modern edge that feels fresh in today’s crowded metal scene. With a lineup that brings together some well-known and talented musicians, they declare from the first moment that they are here to stay, and they take no prisoners.

Besides the band’s core, Bill Sam (bass, songwriting) and drummer Mike Foudotos, they have enlisted some top vocalists like Travis Wills (Crimson Glory, Infidel Rising), Craig Cairns (Tailgunner, ex-Induction), Rob Lundgren (Mentalist, Reveal), and Mauro Elias, along with the skilled Jasmin M. on guitars & keys. Guitar virtuoso Igor Paspalj (Guitarist of the Year 2020 by Guitar World and Guitar Player magazines) appears on two songs, “Whispers of the Heart” and “Carry On” (bonus track).

Each song showcases Nightsteel’s ability to blend classic heavy metal with melodic metal and power metal flourishes, creating a sound that’s both nostalgic and fresh. From the opening self-titled metal anthem “Nightsteel”, a potential classic of the genre, you know something has hit you hard! “Darkness Reigns” is another heavy metal hymn that would make Judas Priest proud, and Wills sounds amazing! “Screams of Agony” is a song that is reminiscent of the classic 80s Helloween era. Wills should have sung it with Kiske! Another banger! “Warlord’s Betrayal” shows the epic side of the band with heavy riffs and powerful vocals. Again, Travis sings his heart out! The power ballad “Whispers of the Heart”, sung by Rob Lundgren, brings to mind the metal 80s ballads, exploring love and longing with a sincerity. “Eternal Fight”, with Craig on vocals, is the epitome of how a melodic metal song should be, with soaring vocals and a catchy chorus! “Calm Lake” slows down the tempo, weaving acoustic guitars and Elias’ raspy vocals into a hard & heavy song that brings to mind the mighty UDO. “Win or Lose”, with Craig on vocals, takes us back to the 80s with a hard rocker that’s radio friendly. “Panagioti” slows down the tempo, weaving acoustic guitars and Elias’ raspy vocals into a song that balances between hard rock and melodic metal. A personal track and very melodious. “Damned Sorrows”, sung by Mauro, delivers aggression and melody, offering another heavy metal blast! Finally, the CD bonus track “Carry On” is a straightforward, melodic heavy metal track with amazing shredding solos from Igor and powerful vocals from Travis.

Great melodies, amazing vocals and great guitars along with the musical diversity keep your interest on a high level throughout the album and that’s the reason why this album is so enjoyable. It’s the kind of record that makes you want to crank the volume and bang your head. “Nightsteel” stands out for its unapologetic reverence for the genre’s roots.
